Every month Seattle Teen Music invites some of the Pacific Northwest’s best teen jazz musicians onto the stage at one of Seattle’s best local jazz stages, Tula’s Jazz Club on second and Blanchard in Belltown. May is no exception with jazz combos that include the Hamilton Vocal Jazz group and Combo, a group from the 2012 Bellevue Rising Stars select jazz group and the Edmonds Woodway high school rhythm section. All of these groups have a great legacy of stage performance and range in age from 12 to 18.

This May is also a benefit concert for one of Seattle Teen Music’s favorite local charities, Teen Feed. Teen Feed works with homeless and underserved teen population throughout Seattle with hot meals virtually every night of the week. They also supply many needed supplies such as blankets, socks, coats and toiletries. Teen Feed has been recognized many times by the community and leaders as one of the best run non-profits in the greater Seattle area.

Seattle Teen Music’s jazz @ Tula’s will collect donations for Teen Feed to help support their vital mission. There will be no cover charge for this concert, but all donations accepted will be given to Teen Feed. Please call Tula’s to make reservations.

Essentially Ellington (EE) happens this week! What is it? Essentially Ellington is a festival and competition dedicated to continuing the legacy of the great music of Duke Ellington and it is run by jazz great Wynton Marsalis. It focuses on all High School jazz programs in North America. Bands from Canada, the USA and Mexico receive free charts and music from the EE team at the beginning of the school year. Those that decide to participate in the festival send in recordings and from the approximately 125 submissions, jazz judges select the top 15 bands. Those 15 are invited to attend the festival in New York City which is held at the Jazz at Lincoln Center. The festival includes clinics and sessions with professional jazz musicians and it culminates with a competition to select the top four bands who then play at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall.

This year represents the 18th year of EE and WE ARE GOING! The EE crew has provided two full access passes for Seattle Teen Music so we will be able to give you behind the scenes ‘sneak peeks’, interviews and stories. If you don’t already, follow us on twitter @seateenmusic and Facebook @seattleteenmusic. We will also post out live viewing instructions if you want to see the competition streamed from NYC.

Seattle Teen Music connects young adult musicians with opportunities to play. Currently we feature monthly standing gigs at The Salmon Bay Eagles for rock and Tula’s Jazz Club for jazz. Our non-profit mission is to serve our community by enriching the lives and opportunities for teen musicians. In 2011 STM produced over 25 concerts with over 100 teen groups and worked with over 300 youth. We are on track to double those numbers in 2012.

The Woodmark has long been considered one of the top places to stay and experience when you are in the Seattle area. It sits waterside to Lake Washington in Kirkland’s beautiful Carillon Point area and boasts some of the best

We’re that special, casual spot where you love to meet friends, and make some new ones. High in quality and in value the Beach Café is welcoming, energetic and fun. A great restaurant for evening drinks. The Beach Café food is familiar, fresh and absolutely crave-able, with a large seasonal patio and water views of Lake Washington from every table. Show up in a bathing suit and sandals, or drop in with your colleagues after work. This Carillon Point restaurant is Kirkland, Washington is open seven days a week, including a twice-daily happy hour, so visit us any time.

Three years ago in March we started with a vision to create live music gigs for teen musicians. After a year of one off private events we grew that vision to include gigs at the Salmon Bay Eagles in Ballard (Seattle). Over the years we have produced over 50 shows, worked with more than 100 bands, set stages for over 250 teen musicians (and a few older ones), who have played for more than 4,500 people. What a cool three years.

This year our calendar has us doubling all of that. We have expanded to include more venues, more genres, more bands but our focus still remains to help young musicians get heard and connect them with places to play. Why? Because music kids are simply the best. They get it, they earn it and they deserve it. And we need their artistic selves coming out in everything they do. Thank you for all your support and guidance…and special thanks to the Teens…you are all Awesome!!!

Of course, this is a labor of love from the musicians, the venues, the parents and our volunteer staff. If you think teen arts are as important as we do, consider helping us turn four with an appropriate donation. Again, thank you for letting us change lives and change the world.
