Seattle area scores in NYC Ellington jazz competition

Seattle area high schools are headed back to New York City and the Essentially Ellington Jazz Festival in May. The festival, in its 17th year, has been a hot spot for Seattle schools and this year is no different. Three schools from the area will be sending their Jazz 1 ensembles and they include Roosevelt, Ballard and Mountlake Terrace. Roosevelt and Mountlake Terrace competed in last years festival and took 2nd and 3rd place respectively, while this will be Ballard’s first appearance in New York. All three bands will also participate in Starbucks Hot Java Cool Jazz this year.

Essentially Ellington was founded and continues to be run by jazz trumpet player Wynton Marsalis. The festival received 111 submissions from high schools around North America and from that they select the top 15 bands. There is also a category for best community program. Of the 15 bands that are selected to attend Essentially Ellington three will be selected to play on stage at Lincoln Center with Wynton Marsalis and members of his jazz orchestra. Approximately 300 students will attend the festival and will also receive clinics and instruction from several of the Jazz @ Lincoln Center’s band.

What is very exciting for us is that many of the young jazz musicians have been playing at our monthly jazz gigs at Tula’s in Seattle’s Belltown area. STM Presents Jazz @ Tula’s happens on the third Saturday of the month from 2 PM – 5 PM and has had high school full jazz bands, combos and several middle school combos. Donations that are raised at these events go for producing CDs and other event material. Consider making a donation today to help support more local teen jazz events.

Echo 9 at the Q! Cafe

Echo 9 plays at Youth Round 2 at the Q! Cafe.

Echo 9, a West Seattle teen rock band, will represent Seattle Teen Music at the Youth Round 2 presented by The Fremont Abbey and hosted by the Q! Cafe. This will be the first round at the Q! which is known for it’s local presence with a global support of fair trade and coffee. The Fremont Abbey created artists rounds to bring many different art passions together in one performance. The rounds include musicians, live painters and poets who draw energy, passion, ideas and motivation for the crowd and each other.

This will be Seattle Teen Music’s first representation at the Youth Round table and we are looking for an exciting night for the bands and the audience.

Seattle Teen Music (STM) supports young musicians by organizing and producing live music events. Founded in 2009, STM has steadily increased our reach to over 50 concerts, 200 young musicians and 5,000 attendees. In 2012 we have over 40 concerts already booked and plan to double all of those numbers in route to successfully launching the dreams, aspirations and careers of many young musicians.

Washington Blues Society

Seattle Teen Music and the Washington Blues Society create a Blues focused partnership for teens.

Seattle Teen Music and the Washington Blues Society will join together to focus on finding and cultivating more teen based blues musicians in the Pacific Northwest. The northwest is already steeped in the tradition of live blues music, which can be heard at several venues. However, many of those venues are still inaccessible to those musicians and concerts goers who are under the age of 21. In an effort to raise awareness, appreciation and accessibility for blues music, Seattle Teen Music will begin creating an informational program that will include live performance and scholarship opportunities focused on the pre- and teen age group.

Watch our website for more details and look for the new “Blues” tab to be added in the near future. If you would like to add your band to the list of potential blues performers send an email to Megan@SeattleTeenMusic.com or attend one of our STM events.

The night was a fundraiser to help support the Abbey’s work in the arts community in Fremont and it raised over seven thousand dollars. The Fremont Abbey is a nonprofit that provides a space and community for the arts to come together. They have music programs, lessons, art programs and live performances for all ages.
